Reliable Chimney Care for Your Home

Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can help keep your chimney flue cleaner and reduce maintenance needs.

Selecting the Right Wood Type

Opt for hardwoods like oak, maple, or birch for your fireplace. These types of wood burn hotter and longer, contributing less creosote buildup in your chimney compared to softwoods like pine.

Hardwoods produce less smoke and soot, which means less residue gets deposited in your chimney flue. This can help reduce the frequency of cleaning needed and help maintain air quality in your home.

Importance of Seasoning

Properly seasoned wood has moisture content reduced to around 20%, making it more efficient to burn. Freshly cut wood, or green wood, can have moisture content of 50% or more, leading to increased creosote buildup.

Ensure your firewood is seasoned for at least six months before burning by storing it in a dry, ventilated area. This helps in achieving a cleaner burn with less smoke and creosote.

Safe Burning Practices

Burn smaller, hotter fires to minimize creosote accumulation. Avoid burning treated wood, painted wood, or any wood with nails or other metal components, as they can release hazardous chemicals.

Refrain from using accelerants like gasoline to start your fires. These can cause unstable and dangerous flames that increase creosote production and risk chimney fires.
